Program Description

Prostate cancer, a disease driven by androgens, is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men in the US. Chemical castration through androgen deprivation therapy is a key treatment strategy to lower production of testosterone, a principal androgen. Emerging second-generation antiandrogens and PARP inhibitors have proven beneficial in treating different types of prostate cancer. Although these therapies show a survival benefit, the 5-year survival rate for patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer remains low. Pharmacists counsel patients living with prostate cancer on different treatment options, considerations for cost of care, and strategies for medication adherence. Pharmacists also communicate with clinicians to suggest therapies to mitigate adverse effects and improve the patient’s quality of life. This activity will explore indications and considerations for emerging therapies, as well as the pharmacist’s role in monitoring and addressing treatment-related toxicities to allow treatment continuation. This activity will keep pharmacists up to date on different combination regimens for treating prostate cancer so they can help individuals achieve favorable outcomes.
