Program Description
Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are hematologic disorders primarily affecting elderly adults. Treatment goals are patient specific, with a common objective to delay disease progression. This activity will review first- and second-line therapies in the treatment of MDS, with an emphasis on drug mechanism of action and the supporting efficacy and safety data. Additionally, the role of the pharmacist in assisting in therapy selection and patient education will also be reviewed. As iron overload is a potential complication in patients with MDS, iron chelation therapy will be discussed, including strategies for pharmacist involvement in managing this adverse effect.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Examine the efficacy and safety data supporting use of hypomethylating agents in the management of patients with higher-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS)
• Analyze the mechanism of action, efficacy, and safety of emerging and recently approved treatment strategies in the management of higher-risk MDS
• Determine the place in therapy for iron chelation to decrease the risk of iron overload in patients with MDS
