Innovations in Cancer Care: Examining the Emerging Role of Bispecific Antibodies in Relapsed/Refractory Lymphoma and Multiple Myeloma

Program Description

T-cell engaging bispecific antibodies (BsAbs) have shown promise as a novel therapeutic approach for multiple hematologic malignancies, in particular lymphoma and multiple myeloma. BsAbs are designed to harness a patient’s immune system for anti-tumor effects, overcome tumor immune escape, and induce disease remission. BsAbs have the potential to offer a chemotherapy-free, off-the-shelf treatment regimen, which is advantageous in less fit patients and those with aggressive disease, but challenges remain particularly in regard to the toxicities associated with BsAbs. Pharmacists must be aware of the complexity of these therapies and impact of treatment sequencing and selection on treatment efficacy. Though this approach may minimize toxicity risks compared with CAR T-cell therapies, neurological toxicities can be severe. Pharmacists can assist in managing disease-associated symptoms and treatment-related toxicities, improving patient-reported outcomes, and educating patients and health care providers. This activity will provide an overview of the pharmacology and mechanism of action of BsAbs. Clinical data supporting the role of approved and investigational BsAbs in relapsed/refractory hematologic malignancies, considerations for treatment selection and sequencing, and challenges for managing toxicities will also be explored.
