Program Description
As one of the most common and contagious infectious diseases in the world, influenza results in worldwide outbreaks and epidemics. Not only can influenza outbreaks pose significant economic costs on a society, such as hospitalization and loss of productivity, but also mortality among adults and even healthy children. Influenza is caused by influenza viruses A, B, or C, which lead to acute respiratory symptoms or respiratory failure. It is the role of health-system and community pharmacists to educate patients about treatment options to reduce or prevent symptoms and complications from the virus. Pharmacists can help ensure the safe and effective use of antivirals in pediatric and adult populations for treatment and chemoprophylaxis according to recommendations or guidelines from the CDC, Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, pharmacists are essential in mitigating the burden of contagious respiratory illnesses, differentiating the clinical presentation of influenza and COVID-19, and addressing patient fears.
