Program Description
Anemia is a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) that is associated with poor clinical outcomes and leads to a substantial burden on patients and health care systems, particularly when left untreated or undertreated. In patients with early-stage CKD, the disease is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. Early detection and effective management of anemia in the setting of CKD is needed to minimize its debilitating effects on patients’ quality of life. Traditional treatment strategies are limited due to adverse complications, highlighting the need for novel therapies. Pharmacists must be well versed in current and emerging strategies to treat and manage anemia of CKD as well as treatments that may be initiated to manage the effects of anemia of CKD. Using evidence-based treatment strategies and individualized patient education, pharmacists will be able to enhance patients’ health-related quality of life and reduce direct and indirect costs of CKD.
