Immune Thrombocytopenia: The Role of Current and Emerging Therapies and Navigating Patient Care Opportunities for Pharmacists

Program Description

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an acquired bleeding disorder that prevents blood from clotting properly, which can be life-threatening for some patients. Treatment for ITP aims to prevent major bleeding and increase platelet count while minimizing adverse effects and achieving remission. Pharmacists have important roles in the medication management of patients with newly diagnosed, persistent, or chronic ITP. As current guidelines do not include preference for one agent, management approaches for patients with ITP may vary based on disease duration, access to care, quality of life implications, and patient and provider preferences. As such, pharmacists must be familiar with data for available and emerging therapies as well as patient comorbidities, medications, and age, which all impact risk of bleeding, when making clinical interventions for patients with ITP. This activity will explore patient-specific factors, duration of treatment, and medication-specific educational pearls associated with use of thrombopoietin receptor agonists, spleen tyrosine kinase inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies, and emerging treatments for ITP.
