Program Description
Diabetic macular edema (DME) and neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are leading causes of visual impairment and blindness, and as the prevalence of diabetes grows and the population ages, so will the number of individuals with these conditions. The consequences of visual impairment lead to challenges in performing activities of daily living and not only affect patients but also caregivers and providers. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a critical role in the onset of DME and in the degeneration of photoreceptors in AMD, leading to central visual acuity loss. Intravitreal injections with anti-VEGF agents are effective and the standard of care for these conditions, but are associated with challenges such as injection burden that may hinder optimal outcomes, which necessitates further research into agents that may extend dosing intervals. This activity will present recent clinical data on approved agents, with a special focus on investigational anti-VEGF agents, delivery methods, and biosimilars in development. To provide cost-effective treatments to patients with DME and neovascular AMD, managed care professionals must apply real-world research and patient-reported outcomes to overcome gaps in current treatment modalities and promote patient adherence.
