Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Pharmacist Considerations for the Emerging Treatment Options

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, noncontagious, inflammatory disorder that affects hair follicles. Painful lesions primarily occur in intertriginous areas and areas that are abundant in sweat glands. The chronicity of the disease and the scarring, limb contractures, raised nodules, skin deformities, along with drainage, and odor have a profound impact on the patient’s quality of life and can be mentally and physically debilitating. Patients can experience severe social stigma, low self-esteem, and sexual dysfunction, all leading to depression, social isolation, and decreased work productivity. Currently, HS is not curable, so the goal of treating the disease is to prevent worsening and lessen the symptoms. As HS triggers an immune response and inflammation, there is evidence that targeting IL-23 or IL-17 may be an effective treatment option for HS. It is important that pharmacists are aware of these emerging therapies and nuances with their safe and effective use. This webinar will review approaches for pharmacists to use their positions within specialty care teams to assist in the management of disease comorbidities with pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management options for patients with HS.
