Program Description
Heart failure (HF) is a significant public health problem that affects an estimated 63 million people worldwide. HF care requires a multidisciplinary approach, and every member of the health care team makes an impact that can change the course of a patient’s life. Pharmacists play an integral role on the multidisciplinary team for patients with HF, and physicians turn to them often for advice. They are uniquely positioned to collaborate with other health care providers and can play a vital role in the development and implementation of institutional guidelines and improving quality of care for patients with HF. This activity will examine ways in which pharmacists can improve their competency in current guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT), as well as current and emerging treatment options and challenges associated with HFrEF and HFpEF. Such practices can lead to improved clinical decision making for integrating new and emerging therapies for patients with HF, with goals of improving health-related outcomes, reducing hospitalizations, and enhancing the health-related quality of life of patients.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Discuss current guideline-directed medical therapy, common comorbidities and challenges faced in the treatment of patients with heart failure, as well as the role of the pharmacist in managing these patients
• Review targeted therapies and the clinical data of emerging therapies in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF)
• List current treatment and emerging therapies for patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF)
