Program Description

Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME) are serious effects of diabetic retinopathy that patients can experience. The pathways for these disease states are based primarily around angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A). These factors can cause inflammation, leakage, discomfort, and vision impairment for patients. The first-line treatment for nAMD and DME is monotherapy with an anti-VEGF agent. This treatment conveys a heavy burden on both patients and providers, with frequent scheduled injections and patient monitoring required. Pharmacists can contribute to the care management of patients with nAMD and DME by becoming familiar with emerging therapies that have a unique dual mechanism. These therapies have the potential to improve outcomes as well as reduce treatment burden for the patient. This panel discussion led by experts will inform managed care professionals about current treatment guidelines as well as present evidence for the role of emerging therapies in the improvement of outcomes for patients with nAMD and DME.
