Frontline Therapies for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Optimizing Outcomes With Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common lung cancer in the United States and is a leading cause of cancer-related death in the US. The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors has impacted the treatment landscape of NSCLC, with an improvement in 5-year overall survival. This activity will review the place in therapy for biomarker-directed treatments, as well as the clinical data supporting their use in NSCLC. As these agents are associated with immune-related adverse events, appropriate management strategies will be discussed, highlighting the role of the pharmacist in patient care.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Examine clinical data for immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in the frontline treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) as monotherapy or combination therapy

• Determine the utility of PD-L1 as a biomarker for the treatment of NSCLC, as well as clinical evidence for emerging ICI-predictive biomarkers

• Construct a strategy for recognizing and managing immune-mediated adverse events to improve patient outcomes
