Program Description
Patients often struggle with selection of agents to properly cleanse a wound as well as how to determine the most appropriate wound dressing. To guide patients in the appropriate selection of available over-the-counter wound dressings and products, pharmacy technicians should be able to explain the advantages of each and identify important phases in the wound healing process or signs of infection. With multiple products available for wound care management, pharmacy technicians need to be familiar with the specific function of each in the wound healing process. This activity will provide strategies pharmacy technicians can use to assist the pharmacist in triaging patients who present to the pharmacy seeking to self-treat wounds.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Recall the functions of the skin in wound healing and the stages of the wound healing process including hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and maturation
- State the advantages of different bandages and wound dressing products available
- Review application of over-the-counter antiseptics and antibiotics for wound cleansing and care
