Program Description
Psoriasis is the most common immune-mediated inflammatory disease in North America and Europe, affecting approximately 8 million individuals in the United States and 125 million worldwide. Psoriasis is characterized by recurrent exacerbations and remissions of thickened, erythematous, and scaling plaques. Adopting a more aggressive treatment approach such as using systemic agents (ie, biologics) earlier with the goal of complete clearance may alter the normal progression of the disease, help more patients to attain long-term remission, and enhance long-term outcomes. Regardless of the accessibility of numerous treatment options and the continued development of efficacious therapies for psoriasis, nontreatment and undertreatment of patients continue to be a significant problem in the United States. A successful treatment regimen includes patient education and routine monitoring of patient response to therapy. In the setting of plaque psoriasis, pharmacists have an opportunity to exert a positive effect on patient outcomes via clinical intervention, patient education, and routine monitoring.
