Program Description

While significant progress has been made in the treatment and prevention of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, emerging variants have led to surges in hospitalizations and re-emergence of severe infections. Antiviral and immunosuppressive/anti-inflammatory therapies have been included in COVID-19 treatment guidelines for management of hospitalized patients, and it has become especially critical that pharmacists are familiar with the most up-to-date recommendations and authorizations regarding COVID-19 treatment and prevention. This session will focus on evolving recommendations for the use of immunomodulators in the treatment of hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• List the risk factors associated with poor outcomes following COVID-19 infection
• Discuss the role of nonsteroid immunomodulators in the treatment of severe COVID-19 infections including efficacy and safety data from clinical trials
• Recognize opportunities that pharmacists have in making clinical recommendations guided by the current NIH and IDSA treatment guidelines for hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19 infections
