Program Description
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a gastrointestinal disease that can cause inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract and flares that can lead to bleeding and hospitalizations. While the exact etiology of UC is unknown, factors that may contribute to increased morbidity include an overactive intestinal immune system, genetic factors, and environmental factors. While there are multiple pharmacologic options for treatment of UC, including corticosteroids, 5-ASAs, immunomodulators, and anti-TNF agents, it is estimated that one-third of patients discontinue therapy due to loss of response. In this discussion, expert panelists will break down current challenges affecting treatment decisions for patients with UC and explore the clinical data supporting the specific role of sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) inhibitors in UC, which have recently gained expanded indications for the treatment of UC. This program features several patient counseling videos, offering pharmacists additional insight into interventions made for individualized care of patients with UC.
