Program Description

Insulin and glucagon are key hormones involved in the regulation of blood sugar. When blood sugar levels drop below 70 mg/dL, patients can develop symptoms of hypoglycemia, which can include shakiness and dizziness, or loss of consciousness and can be life threatening in more severe cases. Pharmacists have important roles in educating patients about identification, risk factors, and management of severe hypoglycemia to promote hypoglycemia awareness among patients with and without diabetes. This activity will review the pathophysiology, causes, and classifications of hypoglycemia. Recent updates to the American Diabetes Association guidelines related to hypoglycemia treatment and the use of different glucagon formulations in the emergency treatment of hypoglycemia will also be discussed.
