Program Description
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for over 80% of lung cancers and is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, with over 131,000 deaths in 2021. A recent expansion in treatment options has occurred following the shift from traditional systemic platinum doublet chemotherapy towards immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). This has led to an increase in the 5-year survival rate and continues to shape the delivery of care. Pharmacists who provide direct care to patients with NSCLC must be informed about the role of biomarkers in therapy selection and the role of ICIs in frontline therapy. Patients treated with ICI therapy are at risk of experiencing unique toxicities, such as checkpoint inhibitor pneumonitis (CIP); certain special considerations must be evaluated prior to ICI use. With thorough clinical insight, pharmacists can assist in the appropriate therapy selection and identification and management of unique toxicities. This activity, which features patient case discussions, will prepare pharmacists to guide the treatment of NSCLC through the connection of PD-L1 expression with ICI treatment selection, application of guideline recommendations, and management of CIP.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Correlate PD-L1 expression with frontline immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment selection in metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
- Apply guideline recommendations and patient-specific factors to treatment selection for a patient with metastatic NSCLC who has not received prior systemic therapy
- Explore strategies to aid in the early identification and treatment of checkpoint inhibitor pneumonitis among patients with NSCLC
