Program Description
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in which overproduction of cyclin D1 leads to increased B cell counts. Many patients experience a rapidly progressing disease course. While no chemotherapy regimen has yet been established as the standard of care treatment in MCL, targeted agents such as Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitors have offered improved treatment outcomes for patients with relapsed and refractory disease. This program will offer oncology pharmacists a closer look at the emerging evidence for the use of BTK inhibitors in the frontline and subsequent settings of MCL treatment. Considerations for addressing acquired resistance to covalent BTK inhibitors through the development of novel, reversible BTK inhibitors will also be discussed. The role of oncology pharmacists is vital in addressing use of emerging oral oncolytic therapies, and they must be knowledgeable about education and counseling on issues related to tolerability and safety of medications, access and cost, and self-care management. Participants will also gain familiarity with strategies to manage toxicities of BTK inhibitor-based therapies.
