Program Description
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a serious, potentially fatal disease of intermittent and recurring swelling that typically occurs in an individual’s limbs and face, as well as the gastrointestinal tract and airways. The current recommended treatment for HAE includes a combination of on-demand and short- and/or long-term prophylactic treatment to reduce the number of life-threatening attacks; however, use of prophylaxis depends on the frequency and severity of attacks, potential adverse effects of different medications, the cost of treatment, and the route and schedule of administration. As accessible members of the health care community, pharmacists play a vital role in not only the identification of HAE, but referrals for treatment and monitoring medications for efficacy and adverse effects. Through this activity, pharmacists will become equipped to help patients overcome treatment barriers and improve patient outcomes through education regarding new and emerging therapies for HAE.
