Program Description

CDK4/6 inhibitors are emerging as an important addition to the adjuvant treatment armamentarium for patients with HR-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer. Regrettably, patients with cancer receiving oral therapies, such as CDK4/6 inhibitors, experience more challenges with at-home administration and treatment nonadherence due to lack of interaction with the health care team. Health-system and oncology pharmacists can bridge important gaps in the care of patients by helping mitigate challenges associated with oral treatment with CDK4/6 inhibitors through personalized treatment and management strategies that consider patient access issues, the cost of therapy, tolerability of medications, patient education, self-management, and monitoring and follow-up. This program will review clinical data supporting therapeutic combination and sequencing strategies with CDK4/6 inhibitors in an effort to help patients with advanced or metastatic HR-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer to improve survival outcomes. Differences among available CDK4/6 inhibitors will also be discussed. Patient case reviews will examine considerations for treatment sequencing as well as disease- and patient-specific factors that influence treatment selection of CDK4/6 inhibitors. Strategies for proactive management of drug therapy with CDK4/6 inhibitors in order to mitigate toxicities and optimize therapeutic outcomes will also be reviewed.
