This activity was originally presented live at the 2022 Asembia Specialty Pharmacy Summit.

This activity features a Patient Perspective.

Program Description

Treatment considerations for older patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) can be influenced by mutation status as well as impairment of physical or cognitive function. Older patients with AML experience high relapse rates leading to poor outcomes, but recent approvals, such as oral hypomethylating agents and combination therapies, in AML maintenance therapy have expanded treatment options and administration routes for older patients who are not able to complete intensive therapy. Pharmacists practicing on the multidisciplinary team in caring for older patients with AML must be familiar with recently approved and investigational treatment strategies. This activity will examine clinical outcomes and guideline recommendations for first-line and maintenance therapies in older patients with AML. As additional agents enter clinical trials or become approved for AML, specialty pharmacists will need to be involved in establishing evidence-based treatment protocols to deliver patient-specific care and reduce financial burden. Expert faculty will also discuss challenges specific to older patients, including mutational and functional status of patients in determining treatment eligibility and supportive care needs.
