Exploring HIV Long-Acting Injectable Uptake: How Pharmacists Can Encourage Long-Acting Injectables to Stem the Spread of HIV

Program Description
Barriers to HIV care include failures in medication adherence, mental health challenges, and social stigma that prevent many people from achieving durable viral suppression. Adherence to treatment and prevention regimens is crucial to reduce transmission of HIV. As HIV care continues to evolve, long-acting injectable (LAI) antiretrovirals are transforming treatment and prevention strategies, but systems need to be designed to support their utilization. This program will equip pharmacists with the knowledge to identify appropriate candidates for LAI therapy, including those eligible for pre-exposure prophylaxis or transitioning from daily oral regimens. Pharmacist-led interventions to address barriers to HIV LAI adherence, counsel people living with HIV on risks and benefits, and optimize HIV management in diverse populations will be discussed. Attendees will gain insights into updated guidelines, clinical trial data for approved and emerging HIV LAI formulations, and best practices for integrating LAIs into routine care to support equitable access.

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Identify and provide a support structure for patients who are candidates for long-acting injectables (LAIs) for HIV management
• Explore the options for HIV prevention and treatment with the appropriate patient
• Exercise pharmacy protocols and systems that support the use of LAIs among the most vulnerable populations, including underserved men who have sex with men, Black Americans, transgender women, and cisgender women
