Program Description
Overactive bladder (OAB), characterized by urinary urgency, frequency, and nocturia, can significantly impact the quality of life for both men and women. Physiologic changes associated with aging, such as decreased muscle tone and decreased bladder capacity, are some of the risk factors for development of overactive bladder, and medications including diuretics, beta blockers, and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors can also contribute to or worsen incontinence. Management of OAB includes behavioral therapy first, followed by nonpharmacologic or pharmacologic therapy, and potentially surgery. Pharmacists need to be aware of current and new treatment options, stay up-to-date with guideline recommendations, be able to assist providers in selecting therapy, and provide education to patients to safely and effectively help those who struggle with OAB.
