Program Description:
Diabetes is a major health concern that has become a leading cause of morbidity, mortality, and health care costs worldwide. As community pharmacies house a range of products for patients with diabetes, from medications to glucose meters and dietary supplements, pharmacy technicians can provide significant services to patients with diabetes. This article will review the main classes of oral diabetes medications for treatment of type 2 diabetes that pharmacy technicians should be familiar with. Potential complications of diabetes will be examined so pharmacy technicians can identify and refer patients who present with potential comorbid conditions or signs and symptoms of worsening diabetes to the pharmacist for additional lifestyle and management counseling.
