Evolving Treatment Strategies in the Management of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Key Insights for the Pharmacist, featuring a Patient Perspective

Program Description

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rapidly progressive condition that is associated with poor prognosis without early diagnosis and treatment intervention. Delivery of care to patients with PAH is complex and requires pharmacists on the multidisciplinary team to be familiar with the etiology of PAH, symptom presentation, and comorbidities to assist in early detection and early treatment. This program will examine guideline recommendations, treatment algorithms, and management strategies to equip pharmacists to appropriately adjust treatment goals for patients with PAH. Emerging evidence for use of combination therapies in treatment and management of PAH will also be discussed. Additional roles for specialty pharmacists in the care of patients with PAH range from comprehensive medication management and adverse effect monitoring to ensuring medication access and adherence. An included patient perspective interview will highlight the health care journey of a patient living with PAH from diagnosis to treatment and explore expanding opportunities for pharmacist involvement on the patient’s care team.
