Evidence-Based Guidelines Point to Leap in Care for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Program Description

Because hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) shares clinical manifestations with other cardiovascular diseases, it is believed that many people are undiagnosed, resulting in poor outcomes. The HCM disease course can vary from early sudden cardiac death to a slow, progressive path that increases in severity with age. Managed care pharmacists need to understand that despite the availability of some treatment approaches that offer short-term improvements in health-related quality of life, pharmacologic interventions to support long-term symptom relief are necessary. Managed care professionals must consider patient preferences, cost, and outcomes when choosing treatment options. This presentation will examine the limitations of standard care for HCM treatment and management. Also explored will be the role of managed care professionals in supporting access to and use of new therapies, including myosin inhibitors. Evidence-based medication management protocols to support adherence to treatment guidelines and informed therapeutic decision-making will also be discussed.
