Program Description
The excessive coughing associated with chronic cough can have a substantial impact on a person’s quality of life. A range of complications, including vomiting, muscle pain, syncope, and fractures exacerbated by coughing, can accompany this condition and contribute to increased healthcare costs and hospitalizations for patients. The pathophysiology of chronic cough, particularly refractory and unexplained cough, can be complicated, and managed care professionals should be aware of the evolving definitions and classifications of the disease. For patients with chronic cough, achieving relief is the main goal of supportive therapies, such as antitussives, narcotics, or corticosteroids, as there are currently no available FDA-approved treatments specifically indicated for chronic cough. However, new and emerging agents with novel mechanisms of action could decrease the burden on healthcare resources, families, work and school, and improve patients’ quality of life and overall health. This interactive discussion will review how the emerging agents for chronic cough work, important guideline updates, and standard assessment tools for managed care professionals that can be used to assess patients and ensure initiation of appropriate therapy to help improve their quality of life.
