Program Description
Initial therapy for ovarian cancer consists of surgery and platinum-based chemotherapy, but the majority of patients with advanced-stage ovarian cancer will experience disease relapse. PARP inhibitors have demonstrated significant efficacy in the maintenance setting of patients with ovarian cancer, and their potential applications continue to expand with use in combination settings. Pharmacists must be able to differentiate indications of each approved PARP inhibitor based on disease mutation status to ensure optimal outcomes for patients. As PARP inhibitors continue to advance the treatment paradigm of ovarian cancer, pharmacists will need to stay updated on considerations and clinical data supporting their use as monotherapy and combination therapy. This activity will also examine the pharmacist’s role in mitigating and managing adverse effects associated with use of PARP inhibitors, with discussion of drug-drug interactions, necessary dose adjustments, and guideline recommendations.
