Program Description
Once a diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) is confirmed, patients are classified as having lower- or higher-risk disease using cytogenetic classification and prognostic scoring values. Therapeutic decisions are different for each risk stratification, and this program will focus on established therapies for lower-risk disease. Pharmacists need to be familiar not only with recommended standard treatment approaches for lower-risk disease but also with treatment strategies for patients with inadequate response to initial therapy or who develop MDS-associated anemia. Pharmacists on the multidisciplinary team can play an essential role in adverse effect monitoring and management, and their prompt intervention can improve outcomes in patients with MDS at risk of anemia or iron overload. Expert faculty will discuss efficacy and safety data for emerging and investigational agents for treatment of MDS or its secondary effects as well as essential elements of supportive care plans pharmacists can implement in practice.
