ESMO Congress 2022: Advances and Best Practices for Managed Care Pharmacists in the Treatment of Metastatic Head and Neck Squamous cell Carcinoma

Program Description

Head and neck cancers most commonly occur in squamous cells lining the lip, mouth, throat (pharynx), voice box (larynx), sinuses, and/or salivary glands after continual exposure to carcinogens such as tobacco and alcohol or infection by human papillomavirus (HPV). Up to 50% of patients with head and neck cancer present with advanced disease. As the treatment landscape for recurrent or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (R/M HNSCC) expands, oncology pharmacists and managed care professionals must keep abreast of the latest evidence-based guideline updates and recommendations for therapy sequence. Immune checkpoint inhibitors have demonstrated efficacy as first-line therapy for patients with advanced HNSCC, but some patients do not respond to these therapies, which has necessitated research into additional therapeutic targets. Managed care professionals must be familiar with recently approved and investigational medications and are important in facilitating patient access to these agents through optimal design of benefit plans. This program will include a recap of clinical data presented at the 2022 ESMO Congress and strategies to apply these data into management plans for patients with R/M HNSCC.

• Explain the naturally occurring prevalence, pathogenesis, and prognosis for the various types of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs).
• Analyze the latest clinical trial data for emerging treatments in HNSCC presented at the 2022 ESMO Congress and how they will be positioned in the treatment paradigm.
• Determine services that can be implemented to enable access to medications, appropriate monitoring, and management of adverse effects.
