Ensuring Pharmacy Technicians’ Proficiency in Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies

Program Description

Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) programs are developed for certain medications that carry high potential for severe adverse effects or medication misuse. Pharmacy technicians must be familiar with different REMS elements, such as enrollment programs, patient education materials, and communication requirements to identify patients who need additional counseling on these elements by the pharmacist. This webinar reviews examples of medications that require the REMS program, with a discussion of strategies and resources pharmacy technicians can refer to implement REMS protocols and procedures within the pharmacy and support patient safety.

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Examine the purpose and regulatory requirements of the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) programs to ensure compliance with legal standards and encourage safe medication use
• Explore specific medications that require the REMS program, including the associated risk, patient populations, and elements required for safe dispensing and administration
• Identify the role of the pharmacy technician to appropriately implement REMS protocols and procedures to optimize patient safety
