Enhancing Pharmacy Roles in Hormonal Contraception Care (Pharmacy Technician Credit)

Program Description

Patients may encounter many obstacles to accessing contraception options in the United States, and the improper or inconsistent use of contraception also contributes to disparities in higher unintended pregnancy rates. Since community pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are uniquely accessible, they are also in a position to provide education and clinical services for contraception. Methods of reversible contraception are generally categorized as hormonal (such as progestin-only pills or estrogen-progestin patches) or nonhormonal (condoms, diaphragms) and long-acting (such as intrauterine devices) or short-acting (such as pills). Participants must recognize which patients are appropriate candidates for hormonal versus nonhormonal contraceptive therapy based on individual factors, differentiate among various types of contraceptive products, and understand the expanding role of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in contraception services. This activity will also provide pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with information necessary about the scope of their authority to prescribe specific formulations of contraceptives to their patients through a variety of methods, but these largely depend on each state’s laws and regulations.
