Program Description
While chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) are distinct B-cell malignancies, Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitors have emerged as effective therapeutic options in both disease states. Guideline recommendations for the use of BTK inhibitors in CLL and MCL vary and require that oncology pharmacists are familiar with supporting data for each recommendation when selecting therapies for individual patients. Despite improved response and survival rates, BTK inhibitors are associated with treatment resistance and poor tolerability, resulting in high discontinuation rates. This program will explore treatment expectations with covalent BTK inhibitor therapy and examine how the development of novel noncovalent BTK inhibitors may overcome existing treatment challenges. The discussion will prepare pharmacists to appropriately recommend preferred regimens in CLL and MCL while minimizing serious and frequently encountered adverse effects, including cardiovascular toxicities, optimizing adherence, and improving access to BTK inhibitor therapies.
