Program Description
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and restrictions to airflow. COPD remains a major cause of chronic morbidity and mortality, and patients can experience frequent or severe exacerbations that can result in hospitalization or require additional therapy. Pharmacologic treatment regimens for COPD exacerbations are guided by several factors outlined in the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Disease (GOLD) guidelines, which can be used in the diagnosis, management, and prevention of COPD. Pharmacists involved in the care of patients with COPD should be aware of updates to these recommendations, efficacy of triple therapies in reducing exacerbations, and be able to implement clinical recommendations in practice. This webinar will focus on efficacy and safety data for triple therapies in the treatment of patients with COPD experiencing frequent exacerbations. The pharmacist’s role in reviewing medication regimens and providing education to reduce the risk of COPD exacerbations during transitions of care will also be discussed.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Examine the most recent updates and recommendations per the GOLD guidelines annually and explore emerging treatment options for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Explore the safety and efficacy of the FDA-approved triple therapies for frequent COPD exacerbations including mechanisms of action, dosing, administration, and potential adverse effects
- Illustrate the role of the pharmacist in the care of patients with COPD, including making clinical recommendations, educating patients about proper inhalation technique, and counseling on the significance of treatment persistence and routine monitoring
