Emerging Vaccines for Preventing and Reducing the Risks Associated with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in Older Adults: Meeting an Urgent Need

Program Description

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the most common upper respiratory infections in children, but the disease also causes hospitalizations for nearly 170,000 elderly US adults annually. Older adults with cardiac disease, chronic respiratory disease, or those who are immunocompromised or with other comorbidities are at increased risk of infection and mortality. To best promote awareness of RSV, pharmacists need to be familiar with symptoms, transmission, and management strategies to reduce disease burden for older adults. Current treatment strategies for RSV are limited and include supportive care and antiviral medications, but there has been an increase in research efforts focused on RSV vaccine candidates in clinical trials. This activity will review evidence for vector-based, subunit, and nanoparticle vaccines in development for prevention of RSV infections in elderly adults. The role of the pharmacist in educating patients and caregivers about preventing transmission of RSV and vaccination strategies to address potential barriers and reduce complications will be outlined.
