Emerging Treatment Options for Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Focus on IL-23 Pathway Inhibition

Program Description
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of idiopathic, chronic conditions characterized by recurrent gastrointestinal inflammation, with patients experiencing periods of exacerbation and remission. Diagnostic delays can lead to poor outcomes, and many patients experience limited response to therapy or lose response over time, highlighting the need for more effective treatments. Increased IL-23 levels have been identified as a key driver of chronic intestinal inflammation, leading to the development of novel IL-23–targeted biologics for moderate to severe IBD. Specialty and managed care pharmacists play a critical role in optimizing IBD treatment by staying informed about evolving therapeutic approaches. This activity will review the pathophysiology of IBD, unmet treatment needs, and emerging IL-23 antagonists. This session will prepare pharmacists to integrate these new therapies into formulary plans to support cost-effective, personalized IBD care.
