Activity Overview
The onset of puberty is typically between ages 8 and 13 years for females and 9 and 14 years for males. Classic manifestations of puberty include development of breasts and menarche for girls and voice changes and testicular enlargement in boys, among other signs. However, an estimated 1 in 1000 to 1 in 10,000 children may experience central precocious puberty (CPP), or the premature development of these and other secondary sex characteristics. Long-acting GnRH analogs are the mainstay of treatment for CPP and stabilize the progression of puberty through continuous stimulation of pituitary gonadotropins. Pharmacists should be knowledgeable about the signs and symptoms of this rare condition and associated therapeutic regimens to best counsel patients and their families about potential short-term and long-term effects of treatment. GnRH analogs are unique medications with special handling, storage, and distribution requirements, making the specialty pharmacist instrumental in facilitating their access and proper utilization. From recommending screening and treatment initiation for CPP to assisting with administration and access to these medications, specialty pharmacists can be involved in decreasing clinical burden, improving quality of life, and optimizing outcomes for patients with CPP.
