Eczema: Burden, the Role of Ceramides and Prebiotics in Management, and the Role of the Pharmacist (Pharmacy Technician)

Program Description

Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is an inflammatory skin disorder that stems from a mutation in filaggrin protein that is expressed as a ceramide deficiency. In addition to this genetic factor, several environmental interactions have been shown to contribute to development of atopic dermatitis and contribute to disease flare-ups. This complex combination of factors causes patients with atopic dermatitis to experience a weakened skin barrier presenting as itchy, red, or scaly patches of skin. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians need to understand the importance of ceramide-containing moisturizers in improving skin quality and overall health of patients with atopic dermatitis. As part of the skin care and ceramides curriculum, this webinar will further prepare pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to educate patients with atopic dermatitis about recommended products to improve skin hydration and barrier function.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Recognize the burden and impact of eczema for patients
• Recall the use of ceramides and prebiotics/probiotics in over-the-counter (OTC) products for the treatment and prevention of eczema
• Express the role of the pharmacy technician in assisting the pharmacist with the identification of patients with eczema who would benefit from use of OTC dermatologic products
