Program Description
Fifty million people worldwide have epilepsy (WHO). It is the fourth most common neurologic condition in the United States occurring in an estimated 3 million adults nationwide with approximately 150,000 new cases of epilepsy diagnosed each year. Epilepsy carries with it several social and psychological consequences. It can negatively impact an individual's ability to perform activities of daily living and consequently can affect their socioeconomic status and mental health. Epileptic seizures have a significant impact on patients’ quality of life. Cluster seizures pose a significant burden on patients with epilepsy and are characterized by multiple seizures within a short timeframe. However, this timeframe is not well defined but can consist of 2 or more seizures within a 6-24-hour window. These clusters (also referred to as acute repetitive seizures, flurries, recurrent seizures) are distinct from an epilepsy patient’s normal seizure frequency and are more likely to occur in patients who have drug-resistant epilepsy. Ensuring that patients have access to effective rescue therapy remains a critical aspect of management. Pharmacists in managed care settings provide an important role in selecting drug therapy, monitoring, and providing education to patients. In addition, updated education about evolving treatment options, updated clinical practice guidelines, practice gaps, and emerging therapies is necessary to ensure that pharmacists are prepared to address unmet medical needs for patients and caregivers in epilepsy.
