Program Description
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death both in the world and the United States, with mortality rates once again on the rise. The main risk factors for developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) are high blood pressure, high serum cholesterol, and smoking, but reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) through lifestyle interventions or statins can help to lessen these risks. Statins, however, present many challenges as many people are intolerant and, even for those who are on a statin, many do not reach their LDL-C target. Because of these complications of statin therapy, professionals are continually researching and developing alternate lipid-lowering therapies with new options recently available. Pharmacists should be able to identify patients who may need additional interventions to reduce their risk of CVD, which can significantly improve patient outcomes. It is essential that community and health-system pharmacists remain up-to-date on all advanced treatments for lowering LDL-C and the nuances of these therapies.

• Review the ongoing burden of cardiovascular disease, current cholesterol guidelines, and issues with statin intolerance
• Discuss nonstatin medications including therapies that are currently available and emerging
• Recognize key risk factors for patients needing further LDL-C lowering
• Outline new nonstatin LDL-C–lowering treatment options that can be incorporated into shared clinical decision making for patients at risk of ASCVD events
