Cigarette smoking causes a multitude of negative health effects on a person's body, from cardiovascular and respiratory disease to cancer. Concentrated counseling efforts from health care professionals, including pharmacy technicians, is a proven, impactful action to promote smoking cessation in individuals. This article will detail the impact and effects of cigarette smoking and equip pharmacy technicians with knowledge about nicotine replacement therapies to encourage smoking cessation among patients. Pharmacy technicians will learn evidence-based intervention strategies to begin the conversation with patients about smoking cessation.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Review statistics regarding tobacco use and its impact on overall patient health
• List the various formulations and instructions for use of available over-the-counter nicotine replacement therapies
• Recall the approaches that can be used to determine a patient’s interest and level of willingness to quit smoking
