Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Diabetes Care: Examining the Value and Addressing Barriers to Access

Program Description
Many persons with diabetes do not meet glycemic targets, which can amplify risk for complications that increase health care resource utilization and decrease patient quality of life. Research has indicated that patients whose diabetes is not adequately controlled are often adversely affected by health disparities and social determinants of health that prevent consistent utilization of health care treatment. The use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices is emerging as a new, cost-effective standard of care option to be incorporated into diabetes management plans to enhance patient monitoring and, subsequently, patient outcomes. This supplement will examine real-world evidence and cost-savings models utilizing CGM to assist managed care pharmacists in developing strategies to minimize costs and access barriers associated with CGM for persons with diabetes.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Analyze the updates to recommendations from the guidelines and clinical trial data revolving around the optimal use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) for diabetes management.
• Identify the benefits and value of CGM in optimizing the management of diabetes and opportunities to improve access for patients.
• Examine the social determinants of health that impact persons with diabetes and ways to enhance health equity.
