Program Description
The global COVID-19 pandemic has led to an unprecedented strain on the US health care system, and its rapid spread continues to pose a national threat, as it has climbed to the third leading cause of death in the United States after heart disease and cancer. The limited treatment options for COVID-19, coupled with its high rate of transmission, contribute to the large number of people infected and resultant morbidity and mortality. A global initiative is underway to develop a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine. As frontline health care professionals, pharmacists will likely be involved in ensuring vaccine access and it’s administration. Vaccine hesitancy is a long-standing health care issue and has only grown due to misinformation related to COVID-19. This educational activity will provide pharmacists with an understanding of the reasons for vaccine hesitancy as well as an in-depth review of the status of efforts to develop a COVID-19 vaccine including considerations for storage, administration, and adverse effect monitoring.
