Clinical Updates of Long-Acting Treatment and PrEP for HIV: Key Considerations for Pharmacists

Program Description

Adherence to therapy remains a main challenge with current HIV treatment. To treat HIV and prevent transmission, guidelines recommend early initiation of antiretroviral therapy as soon as possible after diagnosis. Long-acting (LA) or extended-release (ER) formulations can minimize pill burden, offer an alternative for patients who have difficulty swallowing pills, and improve patient adherence due to less frequent dosing as well as quality of life by increasing health privacy and reducing social stigma associated with HIV. Management of patients with HIV can be particularly complex and challenging from many aspects, but pharmacists have the advantage of having consistent interactions with patients and in-depth knowledge of medications. This program will focus on recently approved and emerging LA treatments for HIV and the role of the pharmacist in assisting with diagnosis, addressing treatment barriers, and identifying patients at risk for nonadherence to improve patient outcomes.
