Program Description

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive, high-grade tumor subtype that is typically diagnosed in women younger than 40 years and leads to higher mortality rates compared with other tumor types. Several disparities, including differences in cancer incidence, mortality and survivorship, and disease-related burden, are associated with TNBC among women of different racial and ethnic groups. Biological, socioeconomic, and geographic social determinants of health have a role in determining the underlying cause of these disparities, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to analyzing TNBC risk. In addition to these disparities, there are several contributors to treatment inequities for women with TNBC belonging to underserved populations. It is important for members of the multidisciplinary oncology team to recognize the factors that contribute to differences in the development, presentation, and outcomes between women with TNBC and implement appropriate measures to reduce the barriers and inequities experienced by some patients. The oncology health care team should also be educated in culturally competent and responsive care to improve quality of care, communication, and support for cultural minorities seeking treatment for TNBC to best address individual patient needs. The multidisciplinary panelists will discuss potential solutions that can proactively mitigate treatment disparities for patients with TNBC.
