Chronic Myeloid Leukemia: Navigating Drug Resistance and Optimizing Care

Program Description
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a myeloproliferative cancer that is characterized by an increased number of immature white blood cells in patients’ blood and bone marrow. Though tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) targeted to BCR::ABL-1 have improved patient survival, several limitations to their use exist, including the potential for drug resistance, TKI-related toxicities, and suboptimal treatment adherence. Kinase-dependent and kinase-independent mechanisms in the BCR::ABL fusion gene cause resistance to certain therapies, and oncology pharmacists are poised to optimize treatment of CML for patients who develop TKI resistance by improving therapy selection and staying informed of updates in recent clinical evidence. This program will provide a summary of clinical evidence for approved and investigational TKIs in the treatment of CML. Guideline-recommended management strategies to support timely recognition of inadequate response or resistance to TKIs as well as mitigate adverse effects of therapy will be discussed.
