Program Description
Immune checkpoint inhibitors are a type of immunotherapy used in the treatment of various tumor types, but they can cause unique immune-related adverse events (irAEs) that require pharmacist expertise. As these agents become more prevalent in the oncology treatment landscape, the roles of pharmacists will continue to expand to encompass patient monitoring, identifying, and managing irAEs. Early detection and treatment of irAEs has been shown to improve patient outcomes. This session will address concepts related to early irAE recognition in real-world clinical practice, management of reversible and irreversible irAEs, and patient education. The case discussions incorporated within this program will emphasize pharmacist-led initiatives to address challenges and barriers to the early identification of clinically significant irAEs, as well as best practices for short-term and long-term follow-up.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of immune-related adverse events (irAE) characteristics, risk factors for development, and appropriate monitoring requirements to promptly identify toxicities of checkpoint inhibitor treatment
- Manage steroid tapers for individual patients, considering the type and severity of irAEs and patient characteristics
- Implement strategies for identification and management of immune-mediated endocrinopathies
- Provide comprehensive patient education on immune-related adverse events, stressing early recognition and reporting
