Canine Drug Therapy: What Pharmacists Need to Know (Pharmacist Credit)

Program Description

Community pharmacists may be asked to dispense medications for dogs. However, there are important factors that can present challenges for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians when determining dosing of these medications. Just as there are patient-specific factors pharmacists and pharmacy technicians must consider when treating humans, there are breed-specific and behavioral issues that can influence medication selection for dogs. Consideration must be given to size, anatomy, and personality of these 4-legged patients when filling prescriptions and providing education about their use in pets. This activity will focus on prescription medications and over-the-counter products available in community pharmacies that can be used to treat common medical conditions in dogs, as well as specific products, drugs, and other substances to avoid.

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Recognize canine physiology and metabolism and its effects on medication use in canine patients
• Outline various ways to administer medications to canine patients
• Review medications and ingredients that can be toxic when used in canine patients
