Program Description
Management of toxicities resulting from anticancer treatments is a concern among oncology pharmacists, as their effects can have both immediate and long-term impact for patients with cancer. Cardio-oncology has emerged in recent years as patients with cancer are at increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Oncology pharmacists must consider the mechanisms of anticancer therapies that can result in cardiac toxicity when determining the most appropriate treatment to mitigate adverse effects. This program will specifically focus on the chronic cardiac adverse effects of targeted anticancer therapies such as Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors and vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors. A discussion of measures oncology pharmacists can lead to mitigate cardiovascular toxicities in patients with cancer will incorporate patient cases that review best practices for therapy selection.
