Program Description
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system characterized by plaque or lesion formation that damages cells. Patients may experience symptoms like vision loss and limb weakness, which can potentially lead to severe disability and high burden of disease and health-related costs. The treatment of MS presents many challenges as symptoms may initially be nonspecific, and there are currently no medications approved to fully prevent or reverse symptoms. This program will highlight recent clinical updates for orally administered disease-modifying therapies that reduce the severity of MS symptoms, limit relapse, and slow disability progression. Specialty and managed care pharmacists play a significant role in individualizing treatment options through providing effective value-based care strategies that facilitate early treatment, optimizing appropriate medication selection and adherence, and decreasing the economic burden for patients with MS.
